The Marble Falls High School softball team demolished Normangee 26-9 March 9 in a contest that ended after three innings.
The Lady Mustangs (11-8-2) scored 13 runs in the first inning.
“We batted all the way through with either walk or a base hit,” head coach Alex Lozoya said. “Even our outs were quality with a (sacrifice) bunt or a sac fly.”
Junior Kierstyn Plumlee had “two big doubles with a runner on base at the bottom of the lineup,” Lozoya said.
Sophomore Cheyenne Thompson hit some sacrifice flyballs that “found gloves.”
Freshman Abigail Boucher “did a great job offensively,” the coach said.
Defensively, junior catcher Emma Cayce entered the contest as the pitcher after an out in the first inning. Cayce has been in the circle some throughout the pre-district season and was a pitcher a couple of years ago.
“I told Cayce to find the strike zone and give our defense a chance,” Lozoya said. “We made some changes. Cheyenne Blair did a good job catching. Emma did a good job of pounding the strike zone. She gets a feel for the strike zone and the umpire. I told her to put the ball in play and the defense backs her up. Our goal is to put the ball over the plate. The defense should be prepared to make plays. They did a good job.”
Junior Kylie Roberts moved to shortstop, while Boucher went to second base.
Junior pitcher Camille Catalfamo “stepped in and got a tough out to end the game,” Lozoya said.
Before climbing on the bus to leave March 8, the Lady Mustangs visited Colt Elementary School to spend time with the students there and then headed to College Station to watch Texas A&M University beat South Carolina 3-0. A couple of weeks ago, the Lady Mustangs watched the University of Texas beat Tarleton State University and last season, they traveled to Waco to watch Baylor University play Stephen F. Austin.
“The whole day was good for them,” Lozoya said of the team activities March 8. “I want to thank parents and the Marble Falls Athletic Booster Club for providing the opportunity and the resources to take the kids on a trip like that. They checked out a college campus and got away and did some bonding. A big part of that was the parental support and our principal, Patrick Hinson.”
The Lady Mustangs begin District 24-4A play with a road trip to Jarrell at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 12.
